Skye's growing reputation as a hotspot for great food and hospitality was again enhanced by the performance of our family owned hotel group. The Sonas Collection has enjoyed a run of Spring success during the Scottish Hospitality Awards season and set the expectation bar one step higher again.
The Scottish Hotel Awards Gala Dinner took place on Sunday 22nd April at the Sheraton Grand Hotel & Spa in Edinburgh, with over 400 members of the hospitality industry in attendance. Every year since 2003 the national winners are awarded during a live and vibrant ceremony where professionals have the chance to meet and celebrate the achievements of their peers. This year, Toravaig House was recognised by the Scottish Hotel Awards as the Island Hotel of the Year 2018. Having been won by Skeabost House for the previous two years, we are delighted to hold on this award within the Group. There was a further celebration in the People of Excellence categories, when Jakub Bors, Group Operations Manager won the Food and Beverage Manager of the Year.
The Scottish Food Awards were held in a glittering ceremony at the Principal Hotel, George Street Edinburgh. The Sonas Collection Head Chefs each picked up a prize which recognised their dedication and skills in the kitchen. Brian Ross, Duisdale House, won the Chef’s Excellence award for Steadfast Service. James Dixon of Skeabost House won Island Chef of the Year for 2018. Toravaig House’s Head Chef, Miles Craven, won a gold medal for Creative Chef. Being recognised within the industry for their skills and talents was a fantastic achievement for the team.
Finally, the Catering in Scotland (CIS) awards took place in Glasgow in May. Skeabost House was nominated to represent the Sonas Collection for the Group Hotel of the Year. The Sonas Collection brand fought off competition from giants of the Hotel world, the Doubletree Hilton in Glasgow and The Waldorf Astoria in Edinburgh. The judges recognised the quality of the Sonas Brand and how this has transferred through the three hotels, including the most recently acquired Skeabost House, from the original vision of founder, Anne Gracie-Gunn. She aspired to bring the luxury and style of a boutique hotel and match it with traditional Island Hospitality. This along with using the Island’s natural larder to provide fabulous dining has proved yet again to be a winning combination.
